About the artist, G. Wayne McCartney A Louisiana native, Wayne grew up wandering the woods near his home. Like many men in the rural South, he started hunting and fishing at an early age. At about 12 years old, armed with a ballpoint pen and some notebook paper, he began to sketch what he saw while sitting in the woods and swamps. It wasn’t until he started college that he first got formal art training which continued when he attended a commercial art school in Houston, Texas. After working in television art departments for a few years, he returned to Louisiana and completed his college education with a degree in Biology. During the following 25 years, he continued painting as a hobby while working for the Louisiana Department of Health.
Upon retirement, he finally was able to concentrate more on painting with special emphasis on his love of wildlife and habitats of the Southeast U S. Wayne’s work is instantly recognized as being in a realistic style with strong attention to detail. Indeed the majority of his work represents actual locations he has visited with wildlife being placed in the natural settings. He places strong emphasis on the relationship between wildlife and habitat so they can be viewed as a single unit. One of the few current artists who work with both acrylic and casein paints, his art has won numerous awards both in Louisiana and Florida. His work can be seen locally in the Alexandria Art Gallery in Land O’ Lakes, Florida.
